A Journey Through Digestive Health: The Fibre Connection
Throughout my life, I have been on a quest to understand my digestive system. I have experimented with a wide variety of foods, eating schedules, and meal compositions. Interestingly, I have found that starting with dessert often works well for me, as my body seems to process sugar better when consumed first!!
The journey has been filled with trial and error, influenced by various life events such as pregnancy, prolonged seasons of high stress, illness and managing ongoing autoimmune issues. These have all significantly impacted on my gut health. Despite all the complexities, one constant has emerged: the importance of fibre in my diet. While I maintain a generally healthy eating pattern and continuously seek ways to stabilise my energy levels and curb cravings, it is so difficult to achieve the right balance from breakfast to dinner. Fibre repeatedly surfaces as a crucial element.
I consistently fall short of my daily fibre goal.
This realisation led me to consider the potential benefits of prioritising fibre intake, aiming for the recommended 30g daily as a foundation for overall health. My typical daily diet includes oats, apples, salads, and steamed vegetables, which provides about 20g of fibre every day. However, reaching the full 30g recommendation requires significant additional effort. On days when I manage to have 30g of fibre, I notice a marked difference in how I feel. The challenge lies in consistently achieving this goal while leading a hectic life. Getting enough fibre each day, has a profound impact on my overall well-being.
